I very much welcome the proposal to reduce the speed limit at Darragh on the N68 Ennis to Kilrush Road from 100km/h to 80km/h.
I want to acknowledge the local campaigners in Darragh who have fought long and hard for action to be taken on this dangerous stretch of road. This section of the N68 has been an accident blackspot for far too long, with local residents and road users repeatedly raising concerns about safety.
A reduction in the speed limit is an important and positive step. While it is not the only measure needed, it can play an important role alongside improved signage, road markings and any further engineering works required to improve safety at Darragh.
The draft proposals by Clare County Council also include slight amendments to the speed limit locations on the M18/N18 motorway off-ramps to reflect the position of existing speed limit signs.
I encourage everyone with an interest in these proposals to take part in the public consultation, which remains open until 5pm on Monday, 31 August.
